Seven miles southwest a racing shell breaches the calm of Coventry Lake as the women’s rowing team begins hour two of its daily practice. The varsity squad is on the lake pre-sunrise every weekday through the first week of November and again as the lake thaws around mid-March. At that time of day — and year — they tend to have it to themselves. “Most of the time, the mornings are peaceful and gorgeous,” says head coach Jennifer Sanford.
